“Some people!” Sheile growled under her
breath. She sat down hard, crossing her arms as she
leaned against the stone.
“What?” Todd was on the bench beside her. She
turned her nose up, and sniffed, “Arnold!”
“Ah.” Sheile and Arnold were complete opposites.
Night and day. Summer and Winter. Israelite
and Philistine. Todd looked at her sympathetically, eyes
weary.
“What happened this time?”
“This time? This time! Do you know what he did
today!” She said harshly, snapping at her
buddy.
“Can't you see the damage?” Sheile wailed. Todd followed the direction her fingers pointed.
“Can't you see the damage?” Sheile wailed. Todd followed the direction her fingers pointed.
Oh. Her brown hair had turned red. To be fair,
the color was closer to auburn- a brownish red.
Todd smacked his forehead. With a huff, Sheile turned away. He started to shake, shoulders
hunched. Sheile glanced his way.

hunched. Sheile glanced his way.
“What's so funny, Todd?”
“What? Funny? ...I don't know!” Todd choked.
“Um hmm. Right. Nothing to see here, folks.
Just a freak show!”
This made Todd laugh out right. Once the dam had cracked, his laughter flooded the air. After a
minute, Sheile began to smile too.
This made Todd laugh out right. Once the dam had cracked, his laughter flooded the air. After a
minute, Sheile began to smile too.
“Okay, okay.” She admitted, “It's a little
funny. Tsk. That guy!” Sheile glared at a leaf on the
path, her face clouding over. Her mood turned sour once more, remembering their clash.
Todd took care of that subconsciously.
“Hey! I'm a guy too!”
“Well, you don't play jokes on me!”
“Yes, I do.”
“That's different. You prank everyone”
“SO THAT NO ONE WILL FEEL LEFT OUT!” Sheile
chorused with Todd.
“That's right!” He said with an impish grin,
raising his pointer finger.
“Apparently Arnold doesn't share your world
views...” Sheile grumbled.
“Hey.” His voice was serious. Sheile looked up.
Whoa. Todd was acting serious. His face
seemed blank without his usual dimples and dancing eyes.
“Sheile...We're cadets.”
“Yeah.”
“As Cadets, well, we all come from different paths of
life, having been recruited from all over
the country. Heck! Some are from other Countries!
Diverse childhoods coming from multiple
cultures. A pandemonium of personalities...”
cultures. A pandemonium of personalities...”
“What are you getting at?” She asked in the same
tone, looking at Todd intently. He returned her
gaze.
“You don't know...” Todd whispered. Sheile cocked a
brow. Frowning, she responded, “What should
I know?” Todd was confusing her. The sorrow in in his
eyes was beginning to alarm Sheile. Wha-?
Todd shook his head. He stared into the distance, unseeing.
“No-can-tell!” Todd said, back to his old self. He
winked at Sheile, exclaiming, “Bro-code!”
“Boys!”
Laughter broke out. This time Sheile joined in. Several
minutes went by it died down, the
hilarity decreasing. Both received stares as they gasped
for air while students passed, always in a
hurry but never too rushed to pause, observing something or
someone to gossip about later.
Sheile fingered the ends of her hair, twisting the
strands.
“So.” She said.
“So-” Todd echoed. She squinted at him, suspecting
mockery. Sheile went on.
“What are we going to do about my hair...?”
“What's wrong with it?”
“What's wrong?
Have you been hearing
me? Are you a doll
double!” She pinched Todd's
cheeks, stretching them with both hands. They were nose
to nose. She sat back suddenly. Todd
rubbed his cheeks, a witty remark on his tongue. Sheile's hands
folded in her lap demurely. The
words died in his throat. Todd straighten, looking around for the
cause of the blush that colored
Sheile's face.
Doc was coming down that path, white coat swaying as it
was kicked aside by his sure pace. He
gave each a nod of greeting as he went to pass. Todd
returned a wave. He liked the guy. Doc was an
fine in his book. He even helped with Todd's jokes
occasionally. He didn't stop him, at least. Sheile's
lips worked silently before calling, “HEY!” Doc
turned toward her. The crimson spread as she looked
down at the lines of her clothes, suddenly quite
interesting. Sheile scratched at a streak and curl of
pattern. With an
audible gulp, Sheile piped, “Lovely weather today, right!” Lovely
weather? She
groaned inwardly. “Right...” Todd repeated, giving
his friend a side look. Doc shrugged. “I suppose.”
came his deep rely. Now
her inner voice sighed. Such a lovely
masculine sound! Her
heart cried.
Her lips curled into a girlish smile.
Her lips curled into a girlish smile.
“Well, if there is nothing else...” He was going to
leave! Quick, something, anything! No Wait.
Sheile's mind kicked in, having rebut. She shook her
head. “No. Nothing. Thanks.” She should be
used to Doc by now. She saw him five out of seven days!
But...it had only been recently that her
attraction to the doctor has risen.
What was wrong with
her? She's have herself checked out, but then
he would
be the one checking! No,
that would not do! Perhaps I should see one of the other
doctors.
Sheile thought. Could
be hormonal imbalance. Might be serious...
