Sunday Edition by Lydia J. 2015

Today I would like to share:

     LUKE 7:35-50 NIV

In our sermon this morning, the pastor taught about the mercy of God.
Our passage from Luke demonstates this in spades through the historical event of:

THE SINFUL WOMAN WASHING
THE FEET OF JESUS

Now, this may seem odd to you.
It was strange for them too.

Cuturally, when one entered a home in the Middle East, properly known as the Near East,
a host would greet their guests with a friendly kiss on the cheek, like the Italians do in the movies.
Oil would be presented, to smooth out frazzled hair, and then water offered to wash their dusty, smelly feet. Israelies walked a lot, or rode donkeys, etc.

I'd like to point out that Israel is close to Egypt,
the country where Mary and Joseph fled when Jesus was a child, to escape death;

"...where he stayed until the death of Herod.
And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet:
'Out of Egypt I called my son.'"

Matthew 2:15 NIV

These comforts would be offered, if you were a good host, who was happy to entertain.
The Pharisee, a religious man, who invited Jesus to have dinner at his house apparently did not respect him, neglecting common curtisies of the day.

The sinful woman did.
She went ABOVE and BEYOND!

As Jesus points out in verse 45 , this woman had not stopped
kissing his feet from the time he had entered the house! Wow!

The summary statements in our sermon were these:

A FORGIVEN HEART IS FULL OF...

LOVE

THANKFULNESS

SACRIFICE

"Therefore, I tell you, her many sins
have been forgiven—as her great love has shown.

But whoever has been
forgiven little loves little.”

Luke 7:47 NIV
